The game will consist of 6 innings or a time limit of 75 minutes. The next inning begins as soon has the previous inning is over. A game is considered complete if 3 innings have been completed (2 1/2 innings if home team is ahead). Regular season games may end in a tie. Any game that is halted due to weather before time has expired, will resume at a later date at the point where the game was halted with the same amount of time “left on the clock.”
The game is over if a team leads by 8 runs or more after 5 innings (42 if home team is ahead).
The infield fly rule is in effect.
All players present will be in the batting order and will bat.
Only 9 defensive players will play in the field utilizing normal infield positions. Remaining players will be in the outfield, Ain the grass.@Each player present is required to play at least every other inning; in other words a player may not sit out more than 1 inning in a row.
Bat Around Rule: Each team will get 3 outs per inning or bat a maximum of 10 batters. The offensive coach must notify the defensive coach that the 10th batter is coming to bat. If the last batter is walked, all runners may advance 2 bases and the inning ends. If there are fewer than 2 outs when the 10th batter comes up, 2 outs will be put on the scoreboard. If the batter hits the ball, normal rules apply except the third out may be obtained by a defensive player with control of the ball stepping on home plate.
Batting out of order Rule: The official batting order shall be the one submitted to the game commissioner. If a player bats out of order and the mistake is noticed and brought to the attention of the umpire before the batter either strikes out or bats the ball into play, the correct batter is then installed in the place of the wrong batter and assumes the existing count. If a player bats out of order and either strikes out or bats the ball into play, the opposing team may bring the matter to the attention of the umpire before the next pitch is thrown. In such a case, the player who batted out of order is called out, all runners are returned to their previous bases, and the appropriate player who should have been at bat is placed in the batter=s box for a new at bat. Once a pitch is thrown to the next batter, however, no appeal may be made.
It should be noted that the appropriate batter after a batting out of order is the player who follows the batting out of order player in the official line up. For instance, if the number 5 batter in the order is skipped and the number 6 batter bats in her place, unless an appeal is timely made, the next player to bat shall be the number 7 batter. Similarly, if a successful appeal is made, a player may bat twice in an inning. For instance, if batter number 6 wrongfully bats in the place of batter number 5 and an appeal is timely made that results in batter 6 being called out, then batter 5 is placed in the batter=s box with batter 6 being on deck.
Stealing is permitted in accordance with NSA Rules.
When the ball is overthrown in an attempt to make a play at a base, runners may advance, at risk of being put out.
Play is stopped only when the pitcher controls the ball on the rubber and time is awarded or at any other time that the umpire awards time.
Pitchers are limited to 3 innings per game. One pitch in an inning constitutes an inning pitched. A pitcher may be removed and return to the mound in a later inning as long as she has not pitched her 3 innings.
A pitcher must be removed on a second visit to the mound by the coach in the same inning.
The offensive team may have no more than 3 coaches on the field, at 1st, 3rd and near the dugout.
The game commissioner will have the official start and ending game times. Game commissioner should announce the official start time to each head coach and umpire when game starts. Game commissioner will have final ruling when game officially ends.
If the Mountain Brook Softball League is combined with another community for a season, then the league rules will be set accordingly with the other community prior to the season starting.
